About
I am Juan Camilo Bolaños, an interaction designer and AI systems builder based in Medellín. My work brings together two things that usually stay apart: interfaces people understand right away, and the automation that keeps the operation behind them running.
The projects in this portfolio come from real settings: a bar in Medellín, the innovation team of a flexible packaging company, a home automation company that depended on word of mouth, and a proposal for an interactive space at the Parque de la Conservación.
I came to interactive design through the curriculum: what drew me in was how multifaceted the degree was, the number of different disciplines it managed to cover. That mix ended up becoming how I work. To me a system isn’t ready just because it looks good and is clear to use: it has to actually work to be presentable as an MVP. I don’t come from programming — I use those tools so the interfaces I design exist and run, instead of staying a prototype. And when something doesn’t work, I say so: these case studies include evaluations of 2.4 out of 5 and tests where half the participants failed the task.
